The Barack Obama administration's crackdown on illegal immigrants and the deportation of a record-high 400,000 persons the last fiscal year has increased the number of Hispanics going to federal prison.
The Christian Science Monitor reports the Obama administration's prosecution of illegal immigrants with criminal records, including those who have entered the U.S. illegally on multiple occasions, has significantly increased the numbers of Hispanics in federal prison.
The CSM also reports the federal actions coupled with state crackdowns in Arizona and Alabama and the economy are all increasing Hispanic poverty levels, especially among children.
New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez has received criticism from immigrant groups for trying to stop undocumented immigrants from getting driver's licenses in the state. In September, she acknowledged her paternal grandparents arrived in the U.S. undocumented.
