Thanksgiving is among the holidays that help bring many Latino
families in this country together.
From abuelita's home cooking to a walk down memory lane, families are starting new traditions as they combine the American culture with their own.
"In Mexico, we don't celebrate Thanksgiving so, the holiday for us now has
really been about togetherness," said Andrea Zamora of Ava.
Bringing the family together during the holidays can be a tough task,
especially if they are like the Zamora family who have members in more than
one city.
"Coming together with the family and friends and really been thankful for
the things that we're blessed with," she said.
Since moving to Ava 17 years ago, the family has adopted several American
traditions which they hope to pass along with each generation.
"We're really close. Every opportunity that we have of being together is
good. We have a good time. We like to tell silly stories. We even look at
silly pictures and laugh at the little monkeys running around," said Zamora.
Food has become a big part of the Latino culture and in this family, its
what helps bring them closer together.
Every year, each person gets assigned a dish to cook.
"This year everybody was helping. Some were helping to do the tamales. Some
where doing the turkey. So, it was pretty nice," said Lili Zamora
Music is also key.
For the family, it connects them to their Latino heritage.
"Thanksgiving is a you know, with life being so crazy and all, not having
time to spend with your family. I think this is the time we spend with our
family. The one time we all get together and actually spend time with each
other and sit down and eat and have a meal. Give each other a hard time, and
have fun and play and have a good time," said Evelyn Zamora
Every year after the big thanksgiving meal, the Zamora's head over to the
living room for a fun, family movie.
